Why Australians Should Recycle Greywater

 Why Grey Water?

Australia is a continent which experiences prolonged periods with little or no rain. This makes it important to use our water wisely. Many Australians love their gardens, however find it difficult to keep a thriving garden in these conditions.  Collecting rainwater is one possible solution, but can we do more? Experts agree, there is assuredly more you can do, by installing a simple (regulation approved) Greywater System, such as the globally recognised leading G-Flow™ or Grey Flow PS® allows you to create an oasis by diverting your household greywater from showers, laundry and kitchen to your garden.

What is Grey Water?

Greywater is all water from the following:

  • Showers / baths
  • Hand basins
  • Laundry / washing machines
  • Kitchen sinks (only if an approved grease trap is installed)

DID YOU KNOW? "Each Australian on average uses 341 000 litres of water per year!"

What are the options?

A greywater system can be as simple as using a bucket to carry the waste water outside, or as complicated as having the greywater piped directly outside using a tank and pump.

According to Water Wise, a simple bucket system can be used to transport the greywater, by hand, from the bathroom to garden. It is the cheapest system, but is inconvenient and increases the possibility of contact and contamination between the greywater and people carrying the bucket. Homeowners can also make one themselves by connecting a pipe from the outlet of their bathroom to a hose pipe, however this is not an approved system.

Alternatively, homeowners can invest in a system that connects the greywater to the outlet pipes of the bathroom and laundry where the greywater will be collected in a tank. The water will run through a hair and lint filter first before it is pumped out through approved sub mulch drip line where it can be efficiently distributed into your garden.  With any greywater system, it is important that you use “garden friendly” products and detergents that do not contain any salts, boron or bleach.

Which is the Best System?

The G-Flow™ manufactured in Australia by AWWS Pty Ltd is the market leader and the first system to be developed. Many thousands of these systems have been sold with great results.  The advantage of the G-Flow™ is that it incorporates its own drip irrigation system and a patented distribution valve which allows you to automatically irrigate 6 zones of drip tube.
